Sunny Side Up

A little playlist for you, inspired by the beautiful sunny weather we've been enjoying these last few days.

Play these tracks with the windows open and let the sun shine down on your face.  Before you know it, you'll be smiling.  :-)  Or at least that's what happens when I listen to these songs.

fall tv recap

currently watching: grey's anatomy (repeat episode)

it's the episode with the patient lady who met a guy while on a cruise but no one believes her because they think she made him up and that it was just a symptom of her brain tumor that meredith and derek are about to operate on. but turns out that prince charming from the cruise actually exists but he gets to the hospital too late, after she had already gone into surgery, after she had just slipped into a coma that she'd never wake up from. damn i was balling at the end of this!!!!! those grey's anatomy writers get my every single time! can't wait for the new season to start!

oh hey look, a perfect segue into my fall tv guide! haha!

ok, here's the run down of all things tv. well, not all things. just the shows that i plan to tune in to. as often as i can. there are a ton of shows on my radar and i won't be able to catch them all, but maybe you will and can tell me all about it! :-)

SUNDAY
Desperate Housewives - 9/26 - 9pm - i stopped watching the last season because the story lines have gotten a little too crazy, but the new season flashes forward 5 years so it's almost like a fresh start. i just may start watching again.
Brothers & Sisters - 9/26 - 10pm - i've always liked this show. stopped watching around the time of the writer's strike and just never got back into it again, especially since i stopped watching desp housewives beforehand. but i'll always love the walker fam and seeing them squabble like my own family.
I Love Money - in season - 9pm - LOVE this show! just can't go wrong with the formula of crazy attention starved people + competition + money. love the stallionaires. and love me some whiteboy!

MONDAY
Gossip Girl - 9/1 - 8pm - i am loving every second of this season! s, queen b, lonelyboy, motherchucker, a dutchess, a duke, little j, tinsley mortimer. seriously! and don't even get me started on all the fashion going on. these stylists need to get an award!
One Tree Hill - 9/1 - 9pm - i stopped watching for a full season (or two) but i'm fully sucked back in to the little world of tree hill, nc. the crazy ex nanny storyline has been off the wall with its suspense like feel but still very entertaining. and nathan and haley's little boy is just the cutest little kid in the world!! plus there's lucas and he FINALLY picked peyton. after all these years of going back and forth they're finally together.
Prison Break - 9/1 - 9pm - love me some wentworth miller but i'm just so behind on this show! check this out, i went to costco one day and decided to buy the season 2 dvd thinking i can catch up real fast before the new season begins. then i see a commercial and it's all, tune in to season 4! damn, my bad! missed an entire season in there!
Heroes - 9/22 - 9pm - similar situation as brothers and sisters - stopped watching around the time of the writer's strike and just didn't get back into to. but i do love this show. and milo ventimiglia. haha! are you seeing a recurring pattern here?
The Rachel Zoe Project - 9/8 - 10pm - it's rachel zoe. enough said. fab fashion every episode. plus she looks like a hot crazy mess.
The Hills - in season - loved the tammy fae moment by lc with the black tears streaming down her face. classic! my love/hate relationship with this show continues. the drama's forced, speidi may as well be issued an actor's guild card because there is nothing genuine about their contrived storylines. and i'm getting really distracted by heidi's face. enough with the plastic surgery!

TUESDAY
90210 - 9/2 - 8pm - see previous posts. i write about this show too much!
Making the Band - in season - 9pm - so far so good. nothing major to report except that willie is HOT!!! don't know how i missed that the previous season!
Paris Hilton's my New BFF - 9/30 - 10pm - i'm all about this show. bitches! paris is so vapid and ridiculous but has zero shame about it which is why i cannot stop watching her every move! the concept of the show is so absurd but viewers will still tune in. because she is paris hilton and she rules the world. game on bitches. gotta love it.

WEDNESDAY
Stylista - 10/22 - 9pm - the concept is it's the devil wears prada.....and runs elle magazine. it's the reality show version of the movie and a bunch of fashion climbers compete to become assistant to anne slowly, editor for elle. slowly is your poor woman's anna wintour, really. haha!
Lipstick - 9/24 - 10pm - another fashion-oriented show (are we picking up on another trend here?), but this time it's a scripted drama. two words: robert buckley. one more word: shirtless. me? sighing and glued to my tv screen every wed at 10.

THURSDAY
Ugly Betty - 9/25 - 8pm - should be another entertaining season, but i want less betty and more marc and amanda!!!
Grey's Anatomy - 9/25 - 9pm - nothing to say except that this is my favorite drama on the air at this current moment. no one else can touch this show. if it's thur at 9, don't bother me! haha!!
The Office - 9/25 - 9pm - only saw a couple of episodes last season, but this is a show you can kinda come in and out of because it's just fuckin hysterical regardless.
Kath & Kim - 10/9 - 8:30pm - looks promising but hoping it's as funny as it looks. actually i should say as funny as they look. have you seen some of these outfits? yowza.
Glam God - in season - 10pm - love this show! some of the stuff these stylists come up with are simply brilliant. and for there to be a loco hawaiian boy calling one of the girls haimakaka is enough of a reason to tune in every week!!

got enough to watch? now go rot your brains!

touch the sky

I am on a mission, people. I'm determined to get my act together and do all the things I keep saying I want to do but never actually get around to doing. "Think it, say it, do it." "E 'ao lu'au a kualima." (see past entry to see what that Hawaiian saying means). Thanks for the little boost Kanye and Little Book of Aloha. :-)

Here's what I got rolling so far.....

1) Running/working out on a regular basis. Check.
I'm on week 2. Thank god for my friend at work - she's been my #1 motivator and supporter. I'm building my way up to running a half marathon as my end goal for now, then longer term goal of a full marathon. But baby steps first. Let's work on establishing a solid workout routine first and sticking with it (and also running for a long period of time without heaving! haha). The sticking with it part is always the more difficult. In addition to the marathon goal, I'm also tacking on the return to club lacrosse as a goal. I need to get back in the game!

2) South Beach Diet. Check.
Actually make that a half check. I've been shaky the last couple of days, but mostly because I've been too lazy to buy groceries. But I've got my diet plan laid out for the next couple of weeks. The last time I did this I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks. I know, kinda crazy huh. I was on a mission back then too because I was getting ready for my bro's wedding and I wasn't about to have my bridesmaid dress all tight and snug while standing at the front of the church before my whole family! I didn't exercise while on the diet last time, so I'm interested to see if I can keep my energy level up during my workouts. I've heard that this diet can make it diffcult to maintain your stamina while exercising. I'll let you know how it turns out.

3) Taking classes. Check.
First on my list - sewing. It's not as "glamorous" as the other hobbies on my list, but I've wanted to learn how to sew for a really long time. So I finally signed up through my local park & rec department and will soon be spending my Saturday mornings behind a sewing machine. Short term goal here - learning the basics - buttons, hems, stitching, etc. Beyond that I wanna try to do some patternmaking. I've been super inspired by the designers here at my work. Plus I've always liked modifying clothes so that they fit my particular body or to achieve the same look as a runway shot or celeb outfit that I'm inspired by. But one can only do so much with double stick tape and some safety pins. :-)

Remember that episode of the Hills when LC was in Paris and she shortened her ball gown so it looked like a party dress? You know, the same one she burned with her curling iron?! Classic Hills moment. Anyway, it's the same kinda concept. She did that fake stitch thing on it so it wouldn't ruin the dress, which I thought was brilliant, and was able to achieve two very different looks with one dress (although she never wore the actual gown the way it should have been worn because she ended up ruining it after all). It's all about maximizing the clothes you have and making slight alterations to achieve different looks. End goal stated.

Some other classes that I've got on my radar: photography, dj lessons, guitar, piano, swimming, tennis, tagalog, japanese, spanish, french. I wanna do it all!! :-) I think I'd be happy if I could add one more class to my current schedule since sewing only takes up one day out of the week. I'll keep yall posted and let you know what my #4 is!

Sublimely Happy with Pandora

Wow, I totally heart Pandora today!

Tuned into my Maroon 5 station for some mellow tracks while I work (nothing like a cup of Starbucks, a bunch of contracts on my desk, and some Adam Levine blaring in my ear to start the day). Then all of a sudden Jack Johnson comes on. At first I'm like, yeah, Jack Johnson! Then I'm singing the words and I'm like, wait, I'm singing a Sublime song! So I click on the song because now I just have to know what album this is from because it's definitely not on any Jack Johnson disc that I have. And good ol' Pandora comes through........

Look At All the Love We Found: A Tribute to Sublime

* insert excitement here *

Unfortunately on compilation discs like this, Pandora doesn't tell you the other artists on the album. But you CAN sample the tracks. So I open up a new browser window (I swear, I'm working simultaneously while all this is going on by the way), get onto Amazon to look for the artists on the album and bam, an all-star listing of the best possible bands that could cover a Sublime tune! Here's the full track/artist list -

1. Jack Johnson "Badfish/Boss DJ"
2. Michael Franti & Spearhead w/Gift of Gab "What I Got"
3. Fishbone "Date Rape"
4. Bargain Music "Get Out"
5. AVAIL "Santeria"
6. No Doubt "DJ'S"
7. The Ziggens "Paddle Out"
8. Mike Watt & Petra Haden w/Stephen Perkins "Work That We Do"
9. Filibuster w/Half Pint "Get Ready"
10. G. Love "Greatest Hits"
11. Greyboy Allstars "Doin Time"
12. Camper Van Beethoven "Garden Grove"
13. Ozomatli "April 29th, 1992"
14. AWOL One/Abstract Rude/Josh Fischel/Transducer "Waiting For My Ruca"
15. Pennywise "Same In the End"
16. Pawn Shop - Los Lobos

I am so buying this album! Pennywise covering "Same in the End"!! Ozomatli doing "April 29th"!!!! Insane. Now the question is, do I buy the hard disc or buy off iTunes? I was recently made fun of for being like the last person on earth still buying actual cd's (you know who you are! haha!), so I'm a little self conscious about my purchase habits (although I'm sure it's only a temporary state and I'll be walking through the doors of Amoeba soon enough). Either way, this album is a must for my collection and I'm super amped about it!!! Thank you Pandora!

A Little Book of Aloha

I bought this little book of Hawaiian proverbs while I was in Oahu a couple of months ago. When I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by life, I like to flip through the book, which includes beautiful pics alongside the quotes, and it helps me calm down a little. I try to remember those brief moments of peace I had while on the island. The drive along the oceanside with my windows rolled down and Jason Mraz/Jack Johnson/Sublime playing on the radio. Floating in the calm waters of Kuhio Beach. Relaxing on the patio outside my hotel room.
And then I feel a little better.

So here are some quotes from the book that I thought I'd share.

"Wae aku i ka lani." = Let the selecting be done in heaven.
Be confident, there is nothing to fear. Take life as it comes. At some point, you have to trust the universe.

"Wela ka hao." = Strike while the iron is hot!
Don't hesitate. DO IT NOW. Don't leave until tomorrow what you can do today. When opportunity knocks, answer the door!

"Le'a kulou a ka lawai'a, ua malie." = The fisherman enjoys bending over his work when all is calm.
Make peace with your surroundings to have peace within. Appreciate the quiet times in life when all is good. Live in the moment. Enjoy the present.

"Nau ke ku'i, lohi ka lima." = When one grinds the teeth, the hand slows.
Forgive and get on with life. Forgiveness is a great power that brings freedom to all sides. Anger is fear of letting go. Let go of the past.

"He poho na ka poho, o ke akamai no ke hana a nui." = Problems happen. Use wisdom and skill to deal with them.
You cannot control events but you can choose your responses. Do the best you can at the time with the knowledge you have at the time. Tomorrow is another day to travel, learn and grow.

"Mai 'ena i ke kanaka i laka aku." = Do not shy away from a person who is attracted to you.
Treat a person who comes in kindness with kindness. Be fragile with matters of the heart for we are all fragile hearts. Be gracious to all you meet.

"E 'ao lu'au a kualima." = Offer young taro leaves five times.
Look to nature for solace and healing. Don't give up, keep trying. Your focus becomes your reality. Change your focus and you change your reality.

"I ka moana no ka i'a, liuliu 'ia na pono lawai'a." = While the fish are still in the sea, get your gear ready.
Focus on what you want to achieve, then do everything possible to help achieve it. Good luck happens to those who are ready for it.

Thank You and You're Welcome

Some quotes from Kanye West's inspirational book that he handed out (not personally, haha) at his Glow in the Dark tour.

"Life is 5% what happens and 95% how you react!"

"THINK IT, SAY IT, DO IT."

"People who say what they think and then do what they say normally get what they want out of life."

"Recognize and embrace your flaws so you can learn from them. Sometimes it takes a little polishing to truly shine."

"The Missing Banister Theory.
When walking down the street, you can walk in one line perfectly without ever falling over. Now take that same city block, make it a foot wider and then put it a hundred stories high. You're going to be so focused on the fact that you don't have a banister, that you're more likely to fall because of it.
When you're so focused on what you don't have.....you won't have!
Isn't it interesting how one thing changes everything?"

Quote of the Day

"Nothing is ever really lost, or can be lost......
The body, sluggish, aged, cold--the embers left from earlier fires,
The light in the eye grown dim, shall duly flame again..."
-- Walt Whitman

The quote above is not only from Walt Whitman's poem"Continuities", but also from the movie, The Notebook, which was playing the other night on ABC Family. :-)  I think I've seen The Notebook 15+ times, and I fall in love with it each and every time. Call me an old sap. I don't know, it just always pulls me in. Just a great love story. A simple story really. And yes, how'd you guess, I did shed a small little tear at the end.  :-)

Okay, I totally acknowledge how girly I'm getting right now, but just bear with me.

So what really tugs at the ol' heart strings, in addition to the great writing overall, is the combination of the musical interludes and the videography. The opening just sets the tone. A piano plays simply and softly. The sun rises over a lake. A man rows his boat along the calm waters. Birds fly through the sky towards a beautiful mansion. Just perfect.

See for yourself -

Come on, doesn't your heart warm up just a little bit, without even seeing our two main characters on screen yet? Okay, so maybe it's just me. I hate to admit it, but I unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) still believe in the happily ever after, in the great love stories. Maybe they're a little harder to recognize in these more cynic times, where people are more prone to a cynic mind (myself included sometimes). But deep down, like I said, I'm just a big idealistic hopeful sap.

And by the way, I dream of that house in the movie. In another life I'd like to live in a house just like that. But instead of it sitting by a lake in North Carolina, I'd rather it sit within walking distance of the oceans of Hawaii.

A dreamer, I am.

Good night.

major L- to tha O-L!!!!

yes, my friends. that is jessica simpson. in a beer ad. for something called stampede light plus. say what now?

so how many things can we count that are just plain wrong (yet hysterical) about this here ad....

1) jessica simpson + beer?
2) the beer name itself
3) the word smart in big bold letters. interesting word choice for someone of simpson's aptitude
4) ummm, she's sitting in the back of a truck against some haystacks.....
5) .....with a whore-ish expression on her face. seriously girl, close the mouth before a fly gets up in there.
6) it's yet another desperate attempt by joe simpson to force his daughter into the world of country music.

yay for michael phelps taking home 8 gold medals.

nay on wearing them all together, sans shirt, with your arms posed like that. at first glance i really thought he was wearing a halter top. then i thought, wait, what the hell is he wearing? then i saw the medals. then i understood. and then i went.....damn!

but whatever, he's still not as hot as medley teammate eamon sullivan, today's unofficial botd. haha!! :-)

currently watching.....

women's gymnastics all-around competition.

been tuning in and out of the olympics all week. gymnastics has always been my favorite. we got the women's all around tonight and just had a couple of quick (and random) thoughts.

 - it's 2008 and these gymnasts are still wearing scrunchies!!? for real? i'd like to speak to the IOC (international olympic committee) about this one.

 - is it just me, or is the music in the floor routines totally pointless and unnecessary these days. may as well throw the tunes out since there really isn't any performance factor anymore when it comes to this exercise. it's just tumbling passes one after another like the men's side.

 - you know who used to be a bad ass on floor? kim zmeskal. oh yeah, i just went old school '92 olympics on yo ass! haha! but seriously, she always demonstrated great showmanship in her routines in addition to the strong tumbling skills.

and once again youtube comes through.  travel with me back in time, to the '92 barcelona games......

you just don't see fun routines like this anymore.

Wow.  This is pretty great to see.

P.P.S. Keepin' it not only in the ABDC family but also the blog fam, a little shout out to fellow blogaholic rolsuno, throwing another one of his crazy parties in the city tomorrow night.

this totally made me cry

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture. I had heard about this when featured on all the primetime news stories a few months back, but I actually just finished watching the lecture on youtube and it totally made me cry at the end.

Then I watched the ABC special on him and I cried some more.

Geez, I'm an emotional wreck over here!

Peep the videos below:

EDIT:  I figured I might as well post the video here for you to watch and enjoy. Take the time to watch it. It's over an hour long.

i gots NO love, ZERO, for so real crew. for real. that first routine sucked ass, yet they're the ones moving on? it should have been super crew vs. fanny pack in the final show and everyone knows it.

i was seriously all teary-eyed during fanny pack's goodbye reel. they are just so good at what they do and hands down the most creative crew over the last two seasons of this show. and it sucks that despite how talented and creative they are, they were still in the bottom 2 and the judges voted them off. they're done. no more fun fanny pack routines. i feel like we're gettin jipped!

so anyway, vote for super crew. in honor of fanny pack. in honor of supreme soul. in honor of asiid. super crew had to bring down 3 great crews to get to the top while so real just coasted through on mediocre, unmemorable routines (seriously, how many so real routines vs fanny pack routines can you remember?).

Vote right! Vote Super Crew!

Site of the Day

if you know me, you know i like my quotes. i've been collecting them for years. since high school. i thank my lacrosse coach for jump starting my collection. before every single game, she would give each of us a motivational quote on a strip of paper and we'd stick it in our sock to keep with us throughout the game. i passed this tradition onto my players when i coached at davis.

anyway, i just saw the wackness last night (more on that later. GREAT GREAT indie flick) and i went to google some lines from the movie because there's this one line that just stuck to me. and i know bits and the general jist of it, but need the exact words. so i'm still searching for it but during the course i came upon this site -

great collection of movie quotes. also go to their blog for some great lists of quotes from various categories. "13 best movie quotes about coffee" or "10 smartest movie quotes of 1998." just across the board.

get your inspiration on.

James McAvoy.

Looks like I've got a bit of a thing for the boys across the pond today! Mr. McAvoy's BOTD honors are actually a tad overdue. I meant to post this after watching Wanted last month but I guess I just never got around to it.  When I first saw him making his move on Hollywood (w/ Atonement), I didn't really think twice about the guy. But then Wanted comes around and I'm like, wait, who is this guy again? (p.s. in addition to j-mac's highlight performance, angelina jolie is just fuckin bad ass in this movie too! BAD ASS.)

The b&w pic actually just caught my eye recently. At work of all places (it was used on an inspiration/concept board for our next season of development). That's what sparked my memory to post this. Thanks work!

Accessory Trend of the Day

Pretty pretty pendants.

Thank you to my ever-favorite site WWWD for calling this out!  While the pendant is nothing new to the world of accessories, what is changing are the longer chains and the bolder pieces. Think of beautiful pieces that you would typically wear as a broach but now dangling loosely around your neck.

Easy to wear. Easy to dress up any basic outfit. That's what I'm talkin about.

Clothing Line of the Day

Play by C. Ronson

You know I'm all about those designers who briefly step away from their higher end collections and pair up with an affordable retailer for an exclusive line!

Charlotte Ronson (yes, sister to Samantha and Mark Ronson) just put out a line for Urban Outfitters called Play by C. Ronson. Super easy, breezy California style. Price points are a little on the higher side, but not too outrageous nor surprising considering we're working with Urban Outfitters here and not a special H&M or Target line.

Overall simple and sweet designs. Faves are the cardigan and the dress shown above.

More on the line on Urban's site.

I think I have a problem

Ok so remember how I got that Marc by Marc bag (that I still absolutely j'adore by the way!)? Well you'd think that I would calm down a little bit with the uber spending on handbags, especially considering how much I had to shell out to Monsieur Jacobs.

Think again.

Went to Napa over the weekend, to celebrate my brother's 35th birthday. I know, my bro and Napa - kinda random pairing right? Blame it on my mama. So after we dined at Julia's Kitchen (delish!), we decided to hit up the outlets real fast. Bad idea. Seriously, I had NO intention of buying a bag when I stepped through the doors of the Coach outlet. Seriously, no intention. I was so close to walking out the door empty-handed, but something pulled me to the corner of the store where a bunch of random bags were sitting. And then I spotted it, hiding behind some suede fringe hobo's........

The Carly Signature in khaki logo print w/ plum trim.

So cute. So perfect. I'm usually not a fan of Coach's logo print on handbags, but seeing it blown up like that just did it for me. Kinda like the oversized LV print that I was raving about a few months back. The pic just doesn't do it justice because I remember seeing this style on Coach's website and I didn't think much of it.  But seeing it in person and trying it on is a whole other story.

But remember how I was just talking about needing a brown hobo?  Well, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind but it fits the bill (in other words, I'll probably still end up getting an all brown, all leather hobo somewhere down the line, so don't be surprised!). Plus I don't have an everyday tan/brown bag. Plus I don't have an everyday-use Coach bag (thanks to my mama swiping my black bag! Dang, that's 3 shout-outs to my mom in just one day!). Anyhow, I'm out of excuses/reasons/rationalizations for my purchase. I'm happy with it and that's all that matters to this bagaholic. :-)

It's a hard Knox (and Vivienne) life.......

The pics of the a-list twins are finally out and circulating the web. But I'm actually loving that one of Shiloh in the corner a little more! How pretty (and ridiculously perfect looking) is she getting!

The Brangelina bunch is now complete. Or is it? 3 adopted kids and 3 au natural. 3 boys and 3 girls. And all these kids are ages 6 years and younger. NUTS!

Currently Watching.....

The red carpet show for the Teen Choice Awards on E!....

And Guilana is interviewing Vanessa Hudgens who's like 16 or something and the teen just said the word escrow. As in she's in the process of closing escrow on her new house. She's 16. That ain't right. I can't even afford rent in SF!

And while we're on the topic of all things teen-related, my mom straight asked me yesterday if I was going to a Jonas Brothers concert!  hahahaha!!!  I guess she heard they were in town and since I went to that Wild 94.9 show not too long ago I guess she figured I may be a Jo-Bro fan?  Or something? Seriously, I don't know where my mom was going on this one, but I was laughing hysterically when she asked. God love ya, ma.

And speaking of awards show, who's excited for the MTV VMA's!  I am, I am!  September 7!
